March 24, 2020

Dear Parents:

We continue to face the challenges of COVID-19 and the extreme measures we must take to keep our students, faculty, staff and the rest of our school community safe and healthy.  We are working to make the best decisions for our school based on the information we are receiving daily from the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Health and the Governor’s Office.  Based on the most current information, hard decisions have been made that will impact normal routines.

EXTENDED SPRING BREAK: Spring Break has already been extended for one week from Monday, March 23, 2020 through Friday, March 27, 2020.

SCHOOL CLOSURE: Schools will now be closed from Monday, March 30, 2020 through at least Thursday, April 30, 2020.  This date may be extended again, given the unpredictable nature of the community spread of COVID-19, to continue health and safety measures.  We will keep you informed.

During the extended Spring Break, Washington Middle School teachers have been hard at work, creating Distance Learning (on-line) activities for our students.  Beginning on Monday, March 30, 2020 you and your child may access these Distance Learning activities by going to our Student Body Government (SBG) website at:

Click on the Student tab in the menu bar to access the list of teams and programs and click on your child’s team. Instructions for parents and students will be posted on these pages. The latest school related updates will also be posted here as they become available.

Teachers are using a variety of platforms to share their instruction based on existing practices and the most effective modes of presentation and communication. Be sure your child looks for all seven of their teachers and classes. Bookmark the individual pages to make accessing the information easier in the future.

During these unprecedented times of “Stay at home, Work at home,” and “Social Distancing,” we must learn what that looks like and what we can do to make it work better.  If you are accessing this message from our school website or any of our other program websites (i.e. AVID or Band) please be sure to click on the SBG button and go to the SBG website.  Please share this information with other parents or students who may be unaware of our attempts to reach out to them.  It would be nice to hear from our students.

We understand that there may be some students and families who do not have access to a device or the Internet.  Beginning on Monday April 6, 2020, we will be starting our Grab and Go Learning Packet Pickup.  These are grade level specific reading and math activities and worksheets that will be available for pickup in our King Street Parking Lot on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. each week until the end of the shutdown.  Any parent or student may drive or walk in to pick up a packet of work to do at home.

Free Grab and Go Meals are available Monday through Friday at either Kaimuki or McKinley High Schools for students 18 or younger.  Your child may pick up breakfast between 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. and lunch between 11:30 – 12:00 noon while they last.  Please take advantage of this free service.

Governor of the State of Hawaii:

The most important message for our students and parents to know is that the faculty and staff of Washington Middle School are here and remain committed to the education of each of our students.  We are thinking about you and we care about you.  Please take care of each other and be well.

In the worst of times . . . the best in us will rise,

Michael K. Harano
